Yoshi Amigurumi
Yoshi! Yoshi!
Ever since Yoshi’s Woolly World (Amazon link) everyone knows Mario’s cute dinosaur. In Yoshi’s Woolly World everything is made of yarn – and you are playing a crochet Yoshi. A little fun fact of the Nintendo merchandise Yoshi Yarn Amiibo (Amazon link) like the one in the back of my Yoshi: It’s a knit Yoshi as it is impossible to crochet by machine. Anyway, I’m sure that most of the people who aren’t knitters or crocheters won’t notice the difference.
As part of a contest held by Nintendo Germany I‘ve been trying to crochet a Yoshi on my own and it really worked out fine.
I had the presence of mind to write down the pattern while I was working on my crochet Yoshi. So here it is:
Yoshi is a registered trademark of Nintendo Co., Ltd. Therefore this pattern is for private use only. You are not allowed to sell this pattern or items made by using this pattern.
Material
My Yoshi made with the materials listed above is approx. 12.5 cm tall.
- Yarn in bulky weight, hook size 6 (J) to 7 mm in Light Green (1 skein), White (1/3 skein) and some scrap yarn in Red, Yellow, Orange, *Light Blue and Dark Violet. I‘ve been using Gründl King Cotton (Amazon link) made of 55% Acrylic and 45% Cotton, length per skein ca. 78 meters.
*You can skip these colors if you like to do the spikes in their original orange color. - Hook 5 mm
- Yarn needle for sewing and weaving in ends
- Felt in Red and White, for eyes and mouth
- Safety eyes approx. 9 mm – you may also use black circles of felt to sew or glue on instead
- Sewing needle to sew on the felt elements
- Sewing thread in Red and White; to avoid sewing on the felt elements by hand you can use glue suitable for wool instead.
- Fibre fill for stuffing

Sew the shell onto Yoshi‘s back using the red yarn leaving the white edge „free“. Stuff the shell slightly while doing this. The red part should stand out from the white one. Do only sew on the red part leaving the white edge „free“. This way it looks more three-dimensional.

Do stuff the feet slightly and sew them to the body bottom left and right.
More photos for assembly help
I took some more photos of my little Yoshi to show you more details. I hope this will make the assembly part a bit more clear:
I know it’s a lot of sewing for this small fellow making the assembly part kind of annoying but I hope you think that it was worth all the effort. Welcome your own cuddly Yoshi Amigurumi!
My pattern is on ravelry, too! I’m happy if you link my pattern in your Yoshi project made by using this pattern. And maybe you would like to share a photo of your crochet Yoshi on my facebook page, too? ♡
I think there is a mistake in the tail’s write up. It jumps from a row of 8 stitches to the final row saying 18 stitches.
Hi, I will check back for this. Maybe I’ve accidentally skipped some lines while I revised it the last time. Thanks for telling me. 🙂
You are right, there is a mistake in the stitch counting for the last row of the tail. It has to be 12 stitches instead of 18.
Hello. I think there’s a mistake in the leg’s write up. Where the Orange round finishes with 15 stitches. The Green round starts with 9 stitches
Hi Sarah, the green round of the leg after the orange part is correct with 9 stitches as you work into the 9 unworked back loops of the previous orange round. You just worked 15 stitches into the front loops meaning there are still only 9 back loops of the round before left. Do not work the green part into the 15 stitches just made. These 15 front loop stitches stay as they are to pop out for a nice effect.
Thank you, i understand it now lol sorry for the blonde moment haha reallg enjoying making Yoshi tho ^-^
Hi there. Thanks for the pattern. How do I download or copy to print out. Thanks
Hi, I’m sorry but there is no PDF or printable version of it. I plan to change this for the relaunch of my website but as my laptop is out of order this might take a lot longer than planned. Meanwhile you could try to use the print function of your browser.
