Totoro hexagon

To-to-ro, To-tooo-ro! ♫

When we moved into our new apartment in July 2015, we didn’t know that the kitchen windowsill would stay unplastered as the house owner thought we would integrate it into our kitchen planing. Well, would have been nice of them to tell us before we bought our kitchen. (-_-)# Anyway, the windowsill is still looking unfinished so I thought a cute little windowsill blanket would be a nice thing to do. A windowsill blanket made of hexagons. Studio Ghibli themed hexagons! And first of all I created a Totoro hexagon.

Totoro is a trademark of Kabushiki Kaisha Studio Ghibli. This pattern is for private use only. You are not allowed to sell this pattern or items made by using it.

Material

The hexagon made by using the materials listed is approximately 14 cm from each corner to corner. You can easily adjust its size by using thiner yarn such as Schachenmayr Catania (Amazon link) or Catania fine (Amazon link) and a smaller hook fitting your yarn choice.

  • Yarn – Schachenmayr Catania Grande (Amazon link) in Grey, Nature White, White and Black
  • Hook 4.0 mm
  • Stitch marker as for some parts you are working in continuous rounds
  • Yarn needle

Nose (Black)

Ch 4, sc in 2nd ch from hook, dc, sc, sl st in same st, f/o, leaving a long end for sewing

Eyes 2x (White, Black)

The eyes are worked in continuous rounds. Do not sl st to join. Use a stitch marker to keep track of your rounds end if needed.

Start: sc 6 into magic ring, pull tight to close ring (6)
Round 1: [inc] sc 2 in each st (12), sl st and f/o, leaving a long end for sewing

→ Stitch Chart

Stitch on a pupil on each eye using your black yarn. Place the eyes and the nose on Totoros face. I use stitch markers to attach each part temporary before sewing them on. Sew the eyes and the nose on using their loose ends.

Ears 2x (Grey)

Start: ch 3, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc (2), ch 1 and turn
Row 1: sc 2 (2), ch 1 and turn
Row 2: [inc] sc 2 in each st (4), ch 1 and turn
Row 3: [dec] sc, sc2tog, sc (3), ch 1 and turn
Row 4: [dec] sc2tog, sc2tog while starting in the st just worked (2), ch 1 and turn
Row 5: [dec] sc2tog (1), f/o, leaving a long tail for sewing

→ Stitch Chart

Sew ears to the top of Totoro. I attached my ones between round 4 and 3. Remember that you need the hexagon edge to sew it together with your other hexagons. Weave in all ends.

My pattern is on ravelry, too! I’m happy if you link my pattern in your Totoro hexagon project made by using this pattern. And maybe you would like to share a photo of your Totoro on my facebook page, too? ♡
