Cthulhu Egg Cozy

Meet the dark lord of the eggs

Long long time ago I did this prototype of a Cthulhu egg cozy and promised to write a pattern for it. Well then, with this fairy tale like start there is the well deserved happy end!

This pattern is for private use only. You are not allowed to sell this pattern or items made by using it.

Material

The egg cozy made by using the materials listed below will fit an egg up to size XL.

  • Yarn in aran weight. I‘ve been using 14 grams of Gründl King Cotton (Amazon link) in light green color »Apfel« (Apple) for doing the body. For the wings I’ve been using 3 grams of Schachenmayr Merino Extrafine 85 in dark green color »Olive«.
  • Hook 5.5 mm for the body, 4 mm for the wings
  • Stitch marker as for the body you are working in continuous rounds
  • Yarn needle for weaving in ends and assembly
  • 2 small buttons in black
  • Sewing needle to sew on the buttons
  • Sewing thread in black

Body (Green)

Start: sc 4 in magic ring, pull tight to close ring (4)
Round 1: [inc] work 2 sc in each st (8)
Round 2: [inc] *sc, sc 2 in next st* rep (12)
Round 3: [inc] *sc 2, sc 2 in next st* rep (16)
Round 4: [inc] *sc 3, sc 2 in next st* rep (18)
Round 5: [inc] *sc 4, sc 2 in next st* rep (24)
Round 6-8: sc evenly (24)
Round 9: [tentacle round!] sc 8, *ch 9, sc 3 in 3rd ch from hook, sc 3 in each of next 6 st, sc in next 2 st* repeat 5 times (making a total of 5 tentacles), sc in remaining st (24)

1st tentacle foundation chain

Tentacle in progress

Round 10 finished, the trickiest part to do

Round 10-13: sc evenly (24)
Round 14: [dec] *sc2tog, sc in each of next 2 st* rep around (20)
Round 15: sc 2, sl st 2. Fasten off and weave in ends.

Place the buttons above the tentacles and sew them on using the black thread and your sewing needle. I placed mine on round 7 and left a gap of 5 stitches between them. I prefer to sew on the buttons vertically as it is giving them a catlike look. This will only work if you are using buttons with only two holes like I did.

Want less tentacle? No problem! For doing only 4 tentacle, start round 9 with sc 10 instead of 8. For doing only 3 tentacle start round 9 with sc 12 instead of 8.

Arms 2x (Green)

Start: ch 6
Row 1: sl st in 2nd ch from hook, sl st in each of remaining 4 st. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Sew the arms to the body using the loose ends and your yarn needle. I placed mine between round 9 and 10.

Wings 2x (Dark Green)

Start: ch 4
Row 1: sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in 2 ch left, ch 1 and turn (3)
Row 2: sc 3, ch 4, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in 2 ch left, hdc in 3 st left, ch 1 and turn (6)
Row 3: sc 3, ch 5, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in 3 ch left, hdc in 3 st left, ch 1 and turn (7)
Row 4: sc 4, ch 6, sc in 2nd ch from hook, sc in 4 ch left, hdc in 4 st left, ch 3 (9)
Row 5: Work 7 dc along the top edge of the wing. Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing.

Sew the wings together by connecting the upper parts of the small sides using one of the long tails. Weave in the short tails of the beginning of each wing. Use one of the loose ends to sew on the left wing to the body and the other one to sew on the right wing to the body. Do not sew on the complete wing. Start on the top middle of the connected wings for both of them. Just sew on 1 cm of each wing. Weave in all ends.

Ready to start with doing round 5

Round 5 done!

My pattern is on ravelry, too! I’m happy if you link my pattern in your egg cozy project made by using this pattern. And maybe you would like to share a photo of your crochet egg cozy on my facebook page, too? ♡
